29 December 2013. I am finally back...

It has been a crazy, exhausting month.  I am finally back enough that I can do a quick update and post.  I will not try to catch up with news.  sorry.

Don't pray for a lighter burdon, pray for a stronger back.  (this has been my favorite quote, one I quote to kids, friends, family, etc for years.  But recently, I need to remind myself!!)

If you cant change the circumstances, change your attitude!

Alma 38:5  And now....I would that ye should remember, that as much as ye shall put your trust in God even as much as ye shall be delivered out of your trials, and your troubles, and your afflictions, and ye shall be lifted up at the last day.

Holy Cow!  I feel like the letter should be complete now.

Most of you have heard about the accident, but I thought I would talk about it now, in case you hadnt heard....

Bryce and I had flown to Las Vegas to visit our daughter Katie and her family for Thanksgiving. Our daughters Jenna and Molly also had joined us from Provo for Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, Jenna and Molly were in a 12-seater van driving back to Utah (in a ride share) when their car was in a serious car accident. Both girls were taken in separate ambulances to the closest hospital.  Bryce and I flew to Utah the next morning to be with them.

Molly was diagnosed with brain injury, a concussion and severe facial bruising.  In addition, painful abdominal bruising and swelling.  She was released that night, with David and Carol driving all the way down from Orem to Fillmore and back, to pick her up and take care of her.   Molly's head and face were  sore and swollen. Her abdomen hurt all across, and got worse and worse for a couple of weeks.  She also has stamina problems, still now, with normal things wearing her out.  In addition, she is still suffering from some memory loss.  She can't remember most of the things associated with the accident and she can't remember random normal information (some people's names, medicines she is on, and other things she should remember.). She was able to return to some classes before the end of the semester and with teachers working to help her, only needed to take one Incomplete for the semester.

Jenna was helicoptered to Utah Valley Medical Center with 3 fractures in her pelvis (including one in the sacrum) and 3 broken ribs. She also had a bad sprain in her right leg--from the ankle to the knee. Two weeks after the accident, her leg started swelling like a tree trunk.  Still, Jenna was in good spirits despite pain that was pretty bad. She was able to do a little more each day. She was in the hospital for a week. She will use a walker for 4-8 weeks, then transition to crutches.
With the help of classmates, she was able to finish most of her course work, and finished the semester with no Incompletes.   She will not be able to return to campus for couple of months at least. A couple she is close to bought her a wheelchair which gives her rest, and much needed independence! Her internship in Alaska was kind enough to hold the internship until she can come, we are hoping March.

After 3 weeks of recovery, the doubtful doctors agreed to let Jenna fly on a 4 hour non-stop flight home for Christmas.  A snowstorm that shut down the Salt Lake City airport messed that up.  The only way we could get home before the 26th was by driving in the snowstorm to Boise to catch a flight.  Except there were no rental cars to get us there.... But angelic people stepped forward to help. Friends who had moved from our ward in VA and now lived in Bountiful called and volunteered to help. They drove us to Tremonton, where Catie/Cathy met us and drove us to her home in Burley to eat, rest, sleep. She found someone to drive us to Boise from there the next morning. (School was still in session, so Catie was still working.)  More delayed flights in Boise.  Jenna put this as her Facebook status--
"Drove nearly 6 hours (with three different drivers/cars) and now we're in Boise waiting to fly to Denver (flight is delayed an hour) to fly from Denver (delayed 15 minutes so far) to BWI (4 hour flight) then a 1.5 hour drive home....... This is ridiculous."  Four states/airports and 40 hours after we started, we arrived home.  Glad the doctors didnt know about it.

At the airport.  6 suitcases, (49.5 lbs each), 2 carry ons, 3 "personal items", guitar, walker, wheelchair, crutches. It was WAY worse than it looks here!  I can't believe we made it!

Liam is home from his mission in Madagascar!  I was in Utah when he spoke in Sacrament Meeting.  He did a great job.   It was pretty cool to go.   All of his brothers and sisters gathered, for the first time in nearly 10 years.  What a great picture of the family!!

and just as a funny side note, here is a picture Sam Ricks put together of TO Smith, Paul Smith and Trenton Ole Smith.  Isn't it fun?

Kelli and Allen Campbell  moved over Thanksgiving weekend to LasVegas.  Their new address is
9366 Pinewood Ridge st.
Las Vegas, NV 89178

Kelli made two Facebook posts about the move...

How do you make a two day, 1200 mile trip with three kids even better? You make four of the five family members congested and coughing (making the parents very irritable and tired which is hard to drive with) then top it off with getting your card skimmed and thus cancelled when you had planned to use said debit card for all your gas on the way down. Today: not awesome.

and
Just a quick note so you all know I'm still alive! We got to our new house and continued to freeze (yes, the cold weather followed us all the way to Vegas) for five days before the gas company finally came and turned on our heat (and stove and dryer and hot water tank). So we are finally now getting things organized and unpacked. Lots of updates and such, but that will come later when we have our internet set up (I'm using Allen's phone for it right now).

I feel for her.  She also announced that she is expecting baby #4!  CONGRATS!!

Cara sent new posts...here are two.
Liam's music program was very fun.  It was a retelling of a fun picture book (The Great Fuzz Frenzy) with music, narration, rhythmic sections, and even dancing.  He did so great!

For several weeks now Liam has been working on a 3D puzzle.
Whenever Liam got discouraged, Barry would jump in and start helping.  Barry was definitely essential to the whole undertaking.  When it was finally finished, both of them were pretty pleased. :)
He finally finished it yesterday and was so proud!

I think that is all for today.  Hopefully I will get back to the schedule this week or next.  Have a great New Year!  Work hard, Study hard, Pray hard!
